Common questions
How much compensation can I get?
Under UK261: £220 for flights up to 1,500 km, £350 for 1,500–3,500 km, and £520 for longer flights (£260 if a long-haul flight is 3–4 hours late). Under EU261: €250, €400 and €600 (€300 for a 3–4 hour long-haul delay). Amounts are per passenger, including children with a seat.
Which flights are covered?
Any flight departing the UK (UK261) or the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland (EU261), whatever the airline. Flights into the UK are covered if a UK or EU airline operates them. Flights into the EU are covered if an EU airline operates them.
What are extraordinary circumstances?
Events outside the airline's control, such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, security risks or bird strikes. Most technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff do not count. The airline has to prove it.
How far back can I claim?
Up to 6 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 5 years in Scotland. In the EU it depends on the country: for example 5 years in France and Spain, 3 years in Germany, 2 in the Netherlands and 1 in Belgium.
Important: DelayOwed is a self-help guidance tool. It is not a law firm or claims management company, does not give legal advice and does not act for you. The eligibility check is an estimate based on the information you give and on EU Regulation 261/2004 and its UK equivalent. The airline or a court makes the final decision.
